Session Overview

Join Peter Miterko, Tim Young and Michael Kenneth of WealthPoint for this 90-minute presentation as they discuss how Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) are an under-utilized strategy as an alternative to a 3rd party sale. ESOPs offer significant advantages to privately-held businesses, ranging from tax mitigation to creating a substantial economic benefit for the employees. The WealthPoint team will discuss what companies make the best ESOP candidates, how to structure the transaction and provide an overview of the ESOP process. Additionally, they will discuss where ESOPs don’t work and alternative ways to compensate key employees through the use of incentive compensation strategies. Real-life case studies will be reviewed.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) work
  • Identify crucial tax benefits for an ESOP and how they can help to repay company debt
  • Provide an overview of how to incentivize key employees through the use of incentive-based or stock appreciation rights (SAR) plans
  • Identify client situations where the strategy works from a goal-based planning approach
