WP90X – ESOPs: A Different Way of Selling to a Third Party

Details

As more business owners head toward retirement, one often overlooked and misunderstood succession strategy that should be considered is an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). ESOPs offer significant advantages to privately held businesses, ranging from tax mitigation to creating a substantial economic benefit for the employees. Despite these benefits, they are often thought of as a less attractive option than a third-party sale. When structured properly, ESOPs are a viable solution for all involved – owners, employees and the operating business – and should be a consideration for all business owners looking to monetize their company.

Session Overview

Join Michael Kenneth of WealthPoint and Drew Schaefer of SCJ Fiduciary for this 90-minute presentation as they discuss how ESOPs are an underutilized strategy as an alternative to a third-party sale. They will review which companies make the best ESOP candidates as well as how to implement on an ESOP. In addition, Michael will interview Drew (an Independent ESOP Trustee) on his view of ESOPs from the Trustee perspective, how he handles ESOP deals and what role a Trustee plays in the entire process, both pre and post-transaction.
